Here is the oldest musical hymn that was written in cuneiform. It is from around the 14th Century from ancient Syria. It was discovered in the 1950s in Ugarit which is modern day Syria.
Below is a copy with music notes that archaeologists put together so we could be able to play the music notes to hear what this ancient song sounded like.
The translation was difficult for archeologists, but they were able to translate what they think reads:
“Once I have endeared the deity, she will love me in her heart,
the offer I bring may wholly cover my sin,
bringing sesame oil may work on my behalf in awe may I”
